Bill Clinton's 'retribution tour' against Barack Obama

"My hunch is that the Clintons smell Obama’s blood in the water right now and, political predators that they are, they are positioning themselves to take advantage (and, frankly, who could blame them for doing so?). We know from 2008 what they really think of Obama. Despite Hillary’s loyal service as Secretary of State, her scathing critique of Obama during their bruising primary still stands – and now looks prescient." http://bit.ly/9xFlOz

True gravity of youthful misdeed

Actually, friend Ruth, I should thank you for properly categorizing a misdeed of my youth. My Latin teacher, of happy memory, kept, with my permission, my paper on the Trojan War. She said I was second only to one of her students of a prior generation in my knowledge of classical mythology. Actually, I now realize, thanks to you, that it was plagiarism. Only one source book. I even traced the illustrations. At the time I realized that I had fallen short. But only now, thanks to you, have I become fully aware of the gravity of my misdeed.

Two Kermits viral video

It takes two Kermits to properly channel the zeitgeist: '"Under Pressure" of Homelessness - Top 5 Viral Videos of the Week - TIME' http://bit.ly/cKQpEp

A friend's birthday

My fourth great connection with Columbus Day.
Barcelona, the port of return on the first voyage, was the home port of my ship in the mid fifties. The monument to the return was a block away from our usual docking. The building in which I set up shop as Senior Shore Patrol Officer was there before Columbus.
On my most memorable Columbus Day I viewed the ceremony at Union Station. The Knights of Columbus honor guard wore black & silver with white plumes and swords. An all African-American high school band played "Scotland the Brave". I was on my way to cause trouble at the Irish Times (named after the world class national newspaper) by standing up for the Welsh. Ain't America grand?
Moses's Anniversary. From my message: "I remember hearing that Andy Ott would have preferred chocolate cake. But the great wedding cake baker had more than one stratagem. I would have preferred a Krispy Kreme Donut cake and truck. But I was ignored."
To be young in hard times and in depressing places has its difficulties. But being young in good times and sanguine places can lead to being puffed up. Like me. Happy Day, and days.

The glories of a Krispy Kreme Donut Wedding Cake

misszoot.com » Krispy Kreme Donut Wedding Cake. Feb 9, 2004 ... Is my wedding cake. Yes. It's made out of Krispy Kreme Donuts. Yes. A Krispy Kreme Donut Wedding Cake. The outer layer are powdered donuts ... http://bit.ly/awrZxU
Happy to hear that friend Ruth likes Krispy Kreme Donuts. Certain parties completely ignored my suggestions about the glories of a Krispy Kreme wedding a few years back.
For me the great glory is not the Krispy Kreme cake, but what happens after the bride and groom take off and the life goes out of the festivities.
In an ideal wedding that is when the Krispy Kreme Donut truck drives up playing "I wish I were single again" on its calliope.  And everybody gets all the free donunts they can carry.

It is Pascal's Triangle, the pyramid of numbers in which the series in the next line is given by adding together adjacent pairs in the line above to generate 1, 1 1, 1 2 1, 1 3 3 1, 1 4 6 4 1, and so on. http://bit.ly/acBmFj

Cranmer: The political persecution of Katharine Birbalsingh

His Grace, Archbishop Cranmer, once again skewers the zeitgeist. "It is fortunate indeed that Ms Birbalsingh is of Indian-Guyanese-Jamaican heritage: it makes her racially untouchable, and her gender facilitates the reception of her damning critique. If she were a lesbian, she’d have a discrimination hat-trick and her school would urgently be looking to settle out of court." http://bit.ly/cNIRP4

From Morrison's new Columbus book

This is primarily an effect of the Calvinist Puritan roots of American progressivism. Jung smarter than Freud

At last, the solution appeared: his patient harbored a buried psychosis, one that was in danger of emerging. To his horror, Jung realized that it must be the therapy itself that was threatening his patient's sanity. Jung was presented with the dilemma of how to cut short the analysis without allowing the patient to guess the actual reason, which might well send him into a tailspin from which he would never recover. (Freud would have kept pushing until the guy was institutionalized.) http://bit.ly/d7LeHW

Obamacare: "a rapidly accelerating set of unintended consequences"

Almost immediately -- it didn't take two months much less six -- the White House is confronted with a rapidly accelerating set of unintended consequences spreading across the country. As listed by the Wall Street Journal, those unintended consequences included 2011 premium increases shooting up as high as 9%; "multibillion-dollar corporate writedowns by Verizon, AT&T, Caterpillar and others"; the disruption of insurance markets, a show-down with McDonald's, the imposition of price controls on premiums, insurers withdrawing from Medicare Advantage.

Google Cars Drive Themselves, in Traffic.

Professor Emiritus Hal Lewis Resigns from American Physical Society

APS management has gamed the problem from the beginning, to suppress serious conversation about the merits of the climate change claims. Do you wonder that I have lost confidence in the organization?
I do feel the need to add one note, and this is conjecture, since it is always risky to discuss other people’s motives. This scheming at APS HQ is so bizarre that there cannot be a simple explanation for it. Some have held that the physicists of today are not as smart as they used to be, but I don’t think that is an issue. I think it is the money, exactly what Eisenhower warned about a half-century ago. There are indeed trillions of dollars involved, to say nothing of the fame and glory (and frequent trips to exotic islands) that go with being a member of the club. Your own Physics Department (of which you are chairman) would lose millions a year if the global warming bubble burst. When Penn State absolved Mike Mann of wrongdoing, and the University of East Anglia did the same for Phil Jones, they cannot have been unaware of the financial penalty for doing otherwise. As the old saying goes, you don’t have to be a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing. Since I am no philosopher, I’m not going to explore at just which point enlightened self-interest crosses the line into corruption, but a careful reading of the ClimateGate releases makes it clear that this is not an academic question. http://bit.ly/bbSIrH

"It can be proven that there were missteps," Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Haines conceded at a pretrial hearing, adding that "I can't begin to explain why things were done back in the day." http://bit.ly/bUYGqg

Politicians and Plastic Surgery: Who Gets Botox?

“I was very disappointed as a plastic surgeon watching him in that debate look like that. I would have counseled him on a more subtle Botox injection. It’s gotta be done so that no one can tell,” Dr. Hakki says.
Dr. Hakki adds, laughing, that “If you’re a politician and you want to change, you better not get caught." http://bit.ly/c2newX

In spiked Vanity Fair piece, Jewish leaders worry about Obama

"I came away from the meeting convinced that Obama has introduced a new and dangerous strategy and that it's revealing itself in steps," Foxman told me. "Unlike other administrations, this one is applying linkage in the Middle East. It's saying that if you resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the messiah will come and the lions will lie down with the lambs." http://politi.co/9JpEeR

James Jones never made it to President Obama's inner circle

The retired general and former NATO commander wasn’t exactly pushed out, people familiar with the situation say. But the affable former Marine wasn’t encouraged to stay — in large part because he happily flouted two of the cardinal rules of this White House: A conspicuous willingness to adopt a 24/7 workweek and a commitment to take bullets to protect a president highly sensitive to the charge that he’s weak on national security.
Jones’ replacement — his deputy Tom Donilon — has excelled at both, and his ascent, in effect, completes the insiders’ takeover of the administration’s national security team. http://politi.co/94lcXr

The Real Scandal of the Foreclosure Mess

The real scandal is that the process of recording property title is so antiquated, and there are so many interest groups that resist modernizing it. The MERS mortgage database shows what a modern system could look like. But all of the counties that charge fees for title recording, the title "insurance" companies that shake down home buyers to buy "protection" from getting sued to prove that they own their property--these interest groups want to keep the title recording system as expensive and unreliable as possible. http://bit.ly/903Ci9

How Unemployment Will Swing the Elections

Obama got his stimulus plan, of course, but on Election Day in November, the unemployment rate will be 9.6 percent--nearly 3 points higher than what Obama said it would be. By most accounts, it will keep going up for a while and probably peak above 10 percent in 2011. Obama will be extremely lucky if it's back to 7 percent by the time he runs for reelection in 2012. http://yhoo.it/cnvJ1K

'Water mining' is now a prime culprit

But a new study shows that global warming is not the only cause of swelling seas. [25%] comes from "water mining" – the pumping of vast amounts of groundwater from beneath the earth, mainly to irrigate crops. This inevitably ends up in the oceans after it evaporates from farmland and comes down as rain. http://bit.ly/azrVhX

the would-be Speaker makes his case

In the battle to define Boehner, the would-be Speaker makes his case
By Molly K. Hooper - 10/08/10 05:41 PM ET
Pushing back against the White House’s effort to portray him as a country-club Republican, Rep. John Boehner and his staff have recently touted that the Ohioan comes from a humble background.
The House minority leader has been a mover and a shaker on Capitol Hill for two decades, but he is attempting to introduce himself to voters who know little about him, most of whom are outside the Washington Beltway. http://bit.ly/coRK9d

The message [to O]: It's the tax cuts, stupid[!]

So two advisory-board members exchanged fire with Obama over the cuts.
Harvard economist Martin Feldstein tried a modest proposal: Extend the cuts for everyone for two years to boost confidence and "keep demand alive at a time when the economy is weak."
After that, he said, it's a clean slate -- the president can take a second look once the economy is on the rebound.
Added former SEC Chairman William Donaldson: A tax-cut "spark" would relieve the uncertainty that has banks and consumers sitting on their cash.
Lately, Obama's been getting it from all sides -- even his former budget director, Peter Orzsag, wrote last month that letting the cuts expire will "make an already stagnating jobs market worse."
But Obama demurred.
Their ideas were "very interesting," he said, but he didn't want to "belabor" the point, meaning: Just sit down and shut up. http://bit.ly/96NFCs

Long After Death, Lennon Remains an Inspiration

Since he was murdered outside the Dakota, 30 years ago in December, Lennon has remained a powerful presence in the culture, both for his songwriting and performances as a Beatle and for his post-Beatles life as a peace crusader, born-again feminist and alternately strident and affecting solo artist. Do we really need to be reminded about John Lennon? http://nyti.ms/cOSH7F

Tea Across the Pond

“A warning from someone whose present resembles your future.”
Daniel Hannan could be the ultimate tea-party candidate, waving his pocket Constitution, citing the Founders, and warning that we are in danger of losing America itself. Hannan even holds public office. Just not in America. He’s a Brit — and a member of the European Parliament — with a love for the Red, White, and Blue. It’s out of that love that he’s written The New Road to Serfdom: A Letter of Warning to America. He talks about it with National Review Online’s Kathryn Jean Lopez. http://bit.ly/cJXKzI

Historically, the NRA has overwhelmingly supported Republicans. But Democrats began backing many pro-gun House candidates in 2006, and now the NRA is coming to their defense. http://bit.ly/9ExiLk

The Unraveling Of ObamaCare

Regulation: Thirty companies and organizations get waivers from the new health care overhaul because otherwise they'd have to raise rates or drop coverage. The president said neither would happen. Hey, where's our waiver? http://bit.ly/djDukM

Union Pushes for ObamaCare Then Is Granted Waiver

The irony would be humorous if it weren’t so sad: The United Federation of Teachers, the New York City branch of the American Federation of Teachers, which pushed ardently for ObamaCare has now requested – and received – a waiver from its mandates. http://bit.ly/aJWZcy
