Constitutional interpretation

The Constitution was written in the name of "We, the People". And the primary interpreter is the Sovereign People thus represented. The common sense of the People and the common language of the People (at the time of writing)  are sufficient. (Of course, not all exhibit much in the way of common sense. And few take the time to google the meaning of words at the time they were written.)

More equal animals

George Orwell instructed us about this: All animals are equal and all animals must sacrifice equally. Except, of course, those animals who are obviously more equal. “Everyone must sacrifice for the greater good… Everyone must have some skin in the game.” - President Obama  http://bit.ly/i4rrWf

Possible biological bastardness of two presidents

Answers below: "I don’t understand why the Governor doesn’t just say ’snap it up . . . send me a copy right now.’ And why doesn’t the President just say ’send me a copy right now.’ Why doesn’t Gibbs and Axelrod say ‘let’s just get this crappy story dead.’" http://bit.ly/hkn4QQ

First Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie announced that he will try to publicly release the document, and now MSNBC host Chris Matthews is wondering aloud why we can't just kill this crappy story.”
‎     Answer #1. He just does it to annoy everyone and to further inflame divisions. He actually wants to re-distribute and increase misery. The universality of his hatred is remarkable. http://bit.ly/hlgwOn
‎Answer #2. Date, not place, of birth has been concealed. http://bit.ly/faQ8AU Date would rule out BHO Sr. as father. Probable father: his later mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, card-carrying Communist, pornographer, womanizer, onetime Chicago community organizer, etc. http://bit.ly/fppMmC
‎Answer #3. Non-Honolulu birth. Long shot. In order of decreasing probability: Washington State, Canada, Zanzibar, Kenya.  Thanks. “This little Babe so few days old, is come to rifle Satan's fold; / All hell doth at his presence quake, though he himself for cold do shake; / For in this weak unarmed wise the gates of hell he will surprise. / With tears he fights and wins the field, His naked breast stands for a shield; / His battering shot are babish cries, His arrows looks of weeping eyes, / His martial ensigns Cold and Need, and feeble Flesh his warrior's steed. / His camp is pitched in a stall, His bulwark but a broken wall; / The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes; of shepherds he his muster makes; / And thus, as sure his foe to wound, the angels' trumps alarum sound. / My soul, with Christ join thou in fight; stick to the tents that he hath pight. / Within his crib is surest ward; this little Babe will be thy guard. / If thou wilt foil thy foes with joy, then flit not from this heavenly Boy.” http://bit.ly/g9HZ0l

Present wrapping made easy:

Being forced by decrepitude to cut back on present wrapping activity, I have recently made a pre-mortem bequest of my easy wrapping wisdom to my Facebook friends. Non-Facebook friends are hereby included in the pre-mortem bequest:

Present wrapping made easy: As a clumsy and lazy person I have found the following helpful. Take the time to get the best wrapping paper you can find. This will compensate for various deficiencies. Your excuse for using transparent tape is that more difficult to apply ribbons would obscure the glory of your wrapping paper. Use big cheap dry-sticky blank labels intended for identifying guests at meetings. Red or green borders are best. Use red and green italic markers in two sizes. Display your humility by making the "To: ..." much larger than the "From: ... ". Your excuse for big cheap labels is that you are easing the burdens of the present-hander-outer.
Wrapping paper should be chosen to draw interest and favorable comments. Its grandeur should set your presents apart from others. (And further assist the present-hander-outer.) Your presents appearing to be more fine, and carefully chosen, and costly. Demonstrations of the magnitude and appropriateness of your affections for the recipients. "%%%%% bodykins, man, much better. Use every man after his desert, and who should ’scape whipping? George Muller

Thanks for post, Michelle. I quickly googled short bio at link: "When God put it into the heart of George Muller to build these orphanages, he had only two shillings (50 cents) in his pocket. Without making his wants known to any man, but to God alone, over a million, four hundred thousand pounds ($7,000,000) were sent to him for the building and maintaining of these orphan homes. When the writer first visited them, near the time of Mr. Muller's death, there were five immense buildings of solid granite, capable of accommodating two thousand orphans. In all the years since the first orphans arrived the Lord had sent food in due time, so that they had never missed a meal for want of food." http://bit.ly/hNXadq

The Great Liberal Death Wish

From Malcolm Muggeridge, The Great Liberal Death Wish | via comment at http://bit.ly/gUkFH0
The efforts that men make to bring about their own happiness, their own ease of life, their own self-indulgence, will in due course produce the opposite, leading me to the absolutely inescapable conclusion that human beings cannot live and operate in this world without some concept of a being greater than themselves, and of a purpose which transcends their own egotistic or greedy desires. Once you eliminate the notion of a God, a creator, once you eliminate the notion that the creator has a purpose for us, and that life consists essentially in fulfilling that purpose, then you are bound, as Pascal points out, to induce the megalomania of which we've seen so many manifestations in our time - in the crazy dictators, as in the lunacies of people who are rich, or who consider themselves to be important or celebrated in the western world’.

The Great Domestic Battle of Our Time

The Great Domestic Battle of Our Time: "You may be noticing a pattern here. Democrats worship the national government and despise the American people and the states. They see any growth of national government as a net positive, and any movement in favor of individual economic liberty as a net loss." http://bit.ly/hFxYUY

Even more than liberals hate individual economic freedom, however, they hate the states. That's because states show how government "should" work. State governments show that those governments that are most local, responsive and non-intrusive are also most successful. For example, the three best states in terms of unemployment are North Dakota (3.8 percent), South Dakota (4.5 percent) and Nebraska (4.7 percent). Not coincidentally, all three states are conservative. The three worst states in terms of unemployment are Nevada (14.2 percent), Michigan (12.8 percent) and California (12.4 percent). All are Democratic and heavily unionized. States are laboratories of democracy; they show consistently that fiscally responsible governance works every time it's tried.

Changing America by Walter E. Williams

"That such an administration could be elected in the first place, headed by a man whose only qualifications to be president of the United States at a dangerous time in the history of the world were rhetoric, style and symbolism -- and whose animus against the values and institutions of America had been demonstrated repeatedly over a period of decades beforehand -- speaks volumes about the inadequacies of our educational system and the degeneration of our culture." http://bit.ly/iebcw2

Thomas Sowell: Christmas Books

The next time someone repeats one of the many myths about FDR, or tries to use the New Deal as a model of how we should try to solve current economic problems, whoever reads this book will have the hard, documented facts with which to shoot down such claims. http://bit.ly/eTybCy
Apparently the real sin of the so-called "robber barons," like that of Wal-Mart today, is that they charged lower prices than their competitors, many of whom went out of business because they were not efficient enough to be able to bring down their prices. http://bit.ly/eTybCy
A book more focused on our contemporary culture is "Spoilt Rotten!" by Theodore Dalrymple. Its subtitle gives its theme: "The Toxic Cult of Sentimentality." Dr. Dalrymple sees sentimentality as not just a silly foible but as a serious danger to government policy-making, as well as a corruption of personal relations. http://bit.ly/eTybCy
The New York Times is not just another newspaper. It has long been a major influence on the rest of the media and on public opinion, so its degeneration into a propaganda publication in recent years is a national tragedy. McGowan spells it all out in plain words and with numerous examples. http://bit.ly/eTybCy

I don't usually read autobiographical books but two very good ones came out this year. My favorite is "Up from the Projects" by economist, columnist and personal friend Walter Williams. It is a small book with a big punch. Once you start reading it, it is hard to put down. | "Up from the Projects" is not only a remarkable story of a remarkable man's life, it is the story of both progress and retrogression in the black community. Everyone wants to take credit for the progress but nobody wants to take the blame for the retrogression. http://bit.ly/gG5SmJ

An even smaller book by a very different man in very different circumstances is "Inside the Nixon Administration"-- subtitled "The Secret Diary of Arthur Burns, 1969-1974." Distinguished economist Arthur F. Burns was chairman of the Federal Reserve System in those years, and these posthumous excerpts from his diary paint a chilling picture of the irresponsibility, vanity, dishonesty and incompetence in the Nixon White House. | This book is not just about the Nixon administration, however. It is about the ugly realities of politics behind the pious talk of "public service." And it is about what it means to have a very strange man as President of the United States-- something that is all too relevant to our own times. http://bit.ly/gG5SmJ

My own new books this year are "Intellectuals and Society," an account of another strange and dangerous group of people, and the 4th edition of "Basic Economics," which is more than twice as large as the first edition. It has been putting on weight over the years, like its author, but the weight is muscle in the case of the book. | "Basic Economics" has sold more copies than any other book of mine and has been translated into more foreign languages. Apparently there are a lot of people who want to understand economics without having to wade through graphs and equations. http://bit.ly/gG5SmJ

Obamacare decision finds liberal agenda unconstitutional. Fabian socialists may be forced to give up spin and resort to the methodology of Lenin, Stalin, and Mao.: "'Hudson rejected the government’s argument that it has the power under the Constitution to require individuals to buy health insurance, a provision that was set to take effect in 2014. | “Of course, the same reasoning could apply to transportation, housing or nutritional decisions,” Hudson wrote. | “This broad definition of the economic activity subject to congressional regulation lacks logical limitation” and is unsupported by previous legal cases around the Commerce Clause of the Constitution.' | Hudson — perhaps not inadvertently — just described the progressive agenda in a single sentence, and why the Constitution forbids it." http://bit.ly/g61upq

"Although it is black, durable, quiet, and lightweight, its most common use will probably be flights above farmland. The most interesting aerial photographs tend to be the highest risk for flying cameras, but my host was confident. We agreed to launch the plane in a field and direct it over a creek and across a neighborhood of single family homes.

Matthew Bright December 2 at 9:47pm Report
Isn't this military technology?

Jim Batley December 13 at 5:22pm
Military technology would cost the taxpayers millions more than this. It looks like a gifted application of off-the-shelf materials and gadgets.
It may have been developed by someone who wanted to know more of what his neighbors were up too.
The technology that keeps us all from getting killed may cost far too much, but I do not regard it as all bad.
I have had second thoughts about the application to agriculture. Images from satellites might be more cost effective if developed and widely used. Images from outside the visible spectrum might support a weatherproof surveillance of crops and herds.

Cranmer disses Assange

Righteous judgement from channeled Archbishop: "But Julian Assange would murder Moses and betray Israel: he would tell Pharaoh that Hebrew women give birth in exactly the same way as Egyptian women (Ex1:19); and he would tell the King of Jericho that Israelite spies are hiding on the roofs of houses (Josh2:4)." http://bit.ly/e8Y81d

Birth of Gideon Andrew Ott, my Facebook meandering

Another GAO & Gideon!?! Prophesy? Providence? Inspired? Just noticed that Gideon Andrew Ott, son of Andy & Jenn, shares initials with the Government Accounting Office. Our government certainly ought to be called to account. Our Nation certainly can use a Gideon: "The Book of Judges:" Gideon http://bit.ly/dMD9Zd
The Book of Judges: Gideon | Yahweh then orders Gideon to tear down his father's altar to Baal, the god of the Amorites and the Canaanites, and to cut down the pole that represents Asherah, the goddess of the Amorites and the Canaanites. He orders Gideon to use the pole to erect an altar to Yahweh and then sacrifice one of his
Jim Batley: Inadvertent inclusion of text above [on Facebook] may be providential. Children generally improve their parents. Gideon of old corrected the defects of his father. Only defect of Andy I am aware of is service in Air Force rather than Navy. Perhaps Gideon Ott will join and improve the Navy as did the co-founder, Les Spencer, of The Navigators http://bit.ly/hDFtEP
Semi-apology to Andy. It seems The Navigators was founded before the Air Force Academy: '"You teach him!" [Dawson] Trotman responded. And the 2 Timothy 2:2 [ http://bit.ly/gQlBUg ] vision was strengthened. | [Les] Spencer did teach the sailor, and soon the two men were meeting with others. Eventually, 125 men on their ship, the U.S.S. West Virginia, were growing in Christ and actively sharing their faith. By the end of World War II, thousands of men on ships and bases around the world were learning the principles of spiritual multiplication by the person-to-person teaching of God's word.' http://bit.ly/i1HTqR
It is interesting that I seem to be carrying on a bit like Simeon: "[Luke 2:]29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:  30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, http://bit.ly/gjF5fT
Usually I seem to be a bit like Polonius: "And Polonius is not exactly an exemplary character. He’s dull, pedantic, wields no real power at court and manages to get himself killed by hiding in the Queen’s bedroom. More to the point, having made this speech full of homely wisdom to Laertes, he is next seen talking to Reynaldo (Act 2, Scene i), a spy he is intending to set on his son." http://bit.ly/gaHWqj

Impeach Obama Now!

About time. Impeach Obama now! "A federal judge in Virginia has declared the Obama administration's health care reform law unconstitutional." http://yhoo.it/i218Ob
Time coming and now is. Republican majority in House next year can and should impeach the president for innumerable high crimes and misdemeanors. Then put witnesses under oath on U-tube. Then let the Senate face a fully informed public. You read it here first.

Eurozone ready for undertaker?

Eurozone ready for undertaker? "Should we blame the current hapless leaders, or the guilty men of Maastricht who created this doomsday machine? If the project itself is rotten, surely what the eurozone needs most is an undertaker." http://bit.ly/hXSEwE

NY Times "Licky Weak[ed]"

Live by the leak, die by the leak: 'Spokesmen from the New York Times, the Washington Post, ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN blasted Assange for exposing communications that linked Obama’s rise and governance to support from and tutelage by some of the biggest names in journalism. [...] "What the hell’s the matter with Assange?  He knows the rules:  we’re leaked to, not on.  Only the Times destroys reputations with impunity and immunity.  He crossed a line coming after us.”' http://bit.ly/gq1mSU

Bearing the sword in vain?

Bearing the sword in vain? Video, pics, links. 'The officers who were protecting their Royal Highnesses showed very real restraint - some of those officers were armed. Their priority was to get that car to the point of safety, which was the venue, and that was achieved, but it was a hugely shocking incident.' http://bit.ly/hN8kRF
Seems like only the English Defense League gets more than light harassment. One supposes that all others are in the politically correct rainbow.

In good company

Ungenerous of him, but in good company. With Melchizedek, David, Solomon, Godfrey de Bouillon, Saladin, etc. "Israel's leader does not want to share Jerusalem - Yahoo! News" http://yhoo.it/i3lb9e

‎"They who are not worthy to win [Jerusalem] are not worthy to behold it." - Richard I of England, Coeur de Leon (Refusing to view Jerusalem from top of nearby hill when forced to call off the Third Crusade after the French deserted.)
In 1967 Israel won Jerusalem the old fashioned way. Fair and square.

Godlessness lite

Godlessness lite: Hatred is a frequent result of Marxism, Islam, elite liberal education, black liberation theology, Chicago politics & godlessness lite, in general: "Instead Mr. Obama said, essentially, that he hates the deal he just agreed to, hates the people he made the deal with, and hates even more the people who'll criticize it. His statement was startling in the breadth of its animosity." http://on.wsj.com/eNtXZf

Gideon Andrew Ott arrived safely despite snowstorm

[Subject:] Gideon Andrew Ott arrived safely despite snowstorm
Jim Batley to Craig [Shakarji], Michael [Flester], bcc: David [Bright]
Sorry not to get up in time so that some news about a couple married in the assembly was sure to get to the assembly promptly. From Facebook (Ruth Bright & Michelle Mir Moses have brought me into the 21st century by inviting me to be a Facebook friend):
____________________________

Jennifer [Bright] Ott: Gideon Andrew arrived on 12/11/10 at 9:53 pm. 7 pounds, 11 ounces, 21.5 inches, and some dark hair! Made it to the hospital...
[...] Alicia Karrick During the blizzard! Yea! Congrats guys!
[...] Kylie Shorma Congratulations Andy and Jenn!!!
Jim Batley Great name. Good size. In marvelousness, birth is only second to rebirth in our blessed Lord.
Jim Batley I trust that after four children you will forgive me for ratting out on a Facebook friend to your parents about your snow comments. I think Mareina had already given them the basics.[big snowstorm when a week or two overdue.]

Moths & Butterflys

Moths might be sufficiently masculine for boys at a butterfly party. The Luna Moth is particularly neat looking. "Butterflies and Moths of North America. Occurrence maps, species accounts, checklists, and photographs" http://bit.ly/ervI6b

Railgun in action

National defense meanders on. "Two clips for you here of the railgun in action. It won’t be ready for use on ships until 2025 or so, but if all goes according to plan, they’ll be able to squeeze off six to 12 rounds per minute. Exit question: Given those Shanghai [middle school math] test scores, won’t the Chinese have already built the Death Star by then?" http://bit.ly/eU1tu1

The "more equal" applaud Holder

Will those of European origin be similarly assured, at least. Even if they are not treated as equal to Animal Farms's "more equal animals": "Despite the differences of opinion, [US Attorney General Eric] Holder received strong applause and a standing ovation [from Muslim group]. Attendees said they felt reassured by his remarks on protecting the civil liberties of Muslim Americans." http://bit.ly/hPtTDC

A Writer's Manual and Workbook by Paul Kies.

Perhaps this link is better than no customer reviews. An internet Answer Man resolved the difficult problem of diagramming the familiar sentence "See Spot run." as follows: "Never fear. We pull out our trusty 1936 edition of A Writer's Manual and Workbook by Paul Kies. Kies writes that to, though it's the "sign of the infinitive," is "frequently omitted, especially after such verbs as help, make, bid, feel, see, hear, dare, need;" e.g., I heard him sing, I see Spot run. He even provides a diagrammed infinitive, which looks like the Flying Wallendas playing jai alai. (See Slug's masterful rendering.) This week sentence diagramming, next week world peace?" http://bit.ly/fEfbkr
Just submitted customer review of book I have not read to Amazon. Not accepted as yet, but copied to blog post: http://bit.ly/eLGclo

Tracking skills

I'm all excited about the animal footprints I found in the snow this morning. Lots of bird prints, a bunny rabbit hopped alongside our pool, a large cat and even a racoon left tracks.

    • Jim Batley Tracking skills are important. An old shipmate, when 16, had discovered Nazi spies in Maine through tracks in the snow.

Obamacare marches on

Predictable. "Doctors simply don't like what the Democrats have force-fed them. A large segment of the healing profession says it's willing to close its doors rather than endure the problems that will be created by the overhaul. Unfortunately, this is exactly the sort of outcome that's expected when lawmakers leave common sense behind and work far outside their moral and constitutional authority." http://bit.ly/ii778l

Red Green suspenders

Mariners would prefer Red Green suspenders with red to port, green to starboard, like running lights. Can this be fixed with duct tape?

Run, Ralph! Run!

Run, Ralph! Run! '"He has no fixed principles," [two-time presidential candidate Ralph] Nader said, of Mr. Obama. "He's opportunistic -- he goes for expedience, like Clinton. Some call him temperamentally conflict-averse. If you want to be harsher, you say he has no principles and he's opportunistic." | "He's a con man," Nader continued. "I have no use for him."' http://bit.ly/dFGbjw
Maybe anyone married to Michelle Obama for two decades would end up "temperamentally conflict-a[d]verse".
